It’s like finding a dollar in a coat you haven’t touched since last winter — but better. An anonymous, wealthy businessman from Kansas City has been lifting the holiday spirit of strangers for the past 12 years by handing out extra cash to those “who look as though they could use a little boost”. With the help of a dozen local police officers, he h...
When Michigan resident Chad Rose just happened to have an extra Christmas tree that was used on his business’s parade float, he did what any decent person would do: he posted on Craigslist to give it away for free. For some, a tree is an annual necessity and integral part of the holidays, but for many it’s an expense that needs to be saved for dail...

GENESIS 1:1–2, 9–10. What most of us mean by ‘the Christmas story’ is told in only 120 verses, split between the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. With scant textual detail to play with, our imaginations have furnished wide-eyed sheep, woolly and worshipful; a star hovering tastefully above a rustic shack; and a caravan of camels.
- Mary probably didn't ride on a donkey. It's possible – although disputed – that a middle-class pregnant woman travelled 80 miles to Bethlehem on a donkey.
- It almost certainly wasn't a stable. The Bible doesn't actually mention a stable, or a barn, or a cave - only a manger (in Luke 2:7). We do read that she laid him in this feeding trough because there was no room for him elsewhere in the place they were staying, but most scholars suggest that this was a guest room in the home of some of Joseph's relatives.
- There's no innkeeper. Similarly, the innkeeper is a function of the story dreamt up to a) make sense of the stable story and b) ensure a suitable role for Charlie Farrington in Year Two who likes shouting 'no!'

Jesus was fully human; fully a baby, and as any parent of small children will tell you, that means he will have regularly screamed down the neighbourhood, especially when he had wind.

The Christmas tree is a symbol of Christ, the miracle of Christmas, and God’s gift of life. The green boughs on a Christmas wreath or a garland point us the perennially freshness of life — that even when we feel as though our world is growing stale, there is always an element of newness and rebirth.
