As the Nativity story is retold year by year, all those who hear it are bound to think—however briefly—about the original Star of Bethlehem that led the Magi to the cradle of Christ, but few would then go and scan the horizon for vestiges of its rising. Lewis was different.
As the Magi brought precious gifts to the new-born Christ, so the three warriors were bringing David water from the well of Bethlehem at the risk of their lives. This fragment of a shutter for a winged altarpiece in the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the finest examples of the Antwerp Mannerist style.

Treasure and terror descended upon the village of Bethlehem for a reason. We know little about the Magi who journeyed from the east to find Jesus. The most compelling evidence suggests that they came from Persia (the land of Queen Esther).
Dec 20, 2023 · Most commentators, trying to identify the Star of Bethlehem, fail to read Matthew 2:7 where it says King Herod “called the wise men and inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.” If it was a celestial event, Herod’s astrologers would already have known when it appeared.
