I think The Affair is my favorite Yoshishige Yoshida film so far. Telling the story of an unhappily married woman's (Mariko Okada as Oriko) exploration of her own desires and those of her mother, the film is gloriously made, rigorously austere and reserved in even its most intense, sensuous moments, a style that aligns precisely with the fierce, determined restraint of its lead character.
