Everyone’s at their best here but especially Shirley MacLaine. The mother-daughter relationship portrayed is one that feels earnest and genuinely real. One that I think a lot of people might relate to even in 2021. The ending is both heartbreaking and touching.
Terms of Endearment is a comedic drama. Laughing and crying come in equal measure. Brooks argues in the Filmmaker Focus that he believed when it came out that it was purely a comedy, but you would be hard-pressed to find someone who would agree with him.

The slow-but-moving drama about relationships and parenting in the late 1970s and early ’80s, which follows a mother (Oscar winner Shirley Maclaine) and daughter (Debra Winger) over the span of several decades and won 5 Oscars, has aged very well over the last 40 years.
