The idea of the Portuguese rabbi and teacher Jacob Judah Leon (1602-1675), known as Templo, to. make a model of an ancient, no longer extant edifice, was entirely new.1. Its success was so remarkable that he was able to establish a private mu- seum in Amsterdam, containing yet more models, and to take these on.
The temple was founded and first built in 1070 at the time of Emperor Lý Thánh Tông, and it hosted the Imperial Academy (Quốc Tử Giám, 國 子 監), Vietnam's first national university, from 1076 to 1779.
León Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mary, mother of Jesus, is known as the Pulchra Leonina and is a masterpiece of the Gothic style of the mid-13th century. The design is attributed to the Master Mason Enrique. By the mid 15th century it was virtually completed. The main façade has two towers.
