Feb 25, 2024 · Bali has dozens of old, interesting Hindu temples to explore. Here's a guide for the best temples to visit in Bali!
- Tanah Lot Temple. Famed for its sunset views, Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most visited temples in Bali located 30 minutes from Canggu. As if floating on the water during high tide, the temple was built in the 16th Century after the travelling Dang Hyang Nirartha – a religious symbol – rested on the rocky island, later telling visiting fishermen that the land felt holy and should be used to worship the sea gods.
- Tirta Empul Temple. Another of Bali’s famous water temples, Tirta Empul Temple is situated on the outskirts of Ubud and is a hotspot for travelers wanting to take part in a purifying ritual (melukat).
- Besakih Temple. The biggest and holiest of all Bali’s temples, Besakih is considered the ‘mother temple’ of the island, and features 23 separate temples within the complex.
- Uluwatu Temple. I think Uluwatu Temple is my favourite because of its beautiful location. Perched on the cliff’s edge overlooking expansive ocean views and stunning sunsets, if you are heading out to Uluwatu for the best Bali beaches, stopping by for a sunset show is a must!
- Pura Tanah Lot. “Tanah Lot” means “land in the sea.” Image credits: Eyestetix Studio on Unsplash. Legend has it that the Hindu god, Varuna, and his army of sea serpents protect the Pura Tanah Lot from evil sea spirits.
- Pura Lahur Uluwatu. This Bali temple is where the sky meets the sea! Image credits: @pop.kate on Instagram. Journeying south to the Bukit Peninsula, you’ll come face to face with the awe-inspiring Pura Lahur Uluwatu—or Uluwatu Temple, for short.
- Saraswati Temple. The Saraswati Temple is also known as the Ubud Water Palace. Image credits: @pavlovskaya_daria on Instagram. If there’s one place in Bali where you can cool off (aside from the beaches, of course), the Saraswati Temple would be it.
- Goa Lawah Temple. Good luck spotting Batman at this Hindu temple! Image credits: @ann_potapakhina on Instagram. Our next temple is one that’s teeming with bats.

- Gunung Lebah Temple – Overlooks Ubud’s Campuhan Valley. Here’s one you’ll most likely come across when going on a hike at the Campuhan Ridge Walk. Gunung Lebah Temple is another hidden gem in Ubud.
- Tirta Empul Temple – Sacred 10th-century water temple. Image credit: Patrick Foto via Flickr. Think bathing pools and spiritual presence and Tirta Empul Temple comes to mind.
