The Greater Wichita Athletic League (GWAL) is a league based in Wichita. Its nine members are each in either the 6A or 5A classes.
The GWAL was founded in 1957 under the name Wichita City League by four schools in the Wichita School District- North, East, West, and Southeast. Every remaining school in the Wichita Public Schools has joined upon their opening- South in 1959, Heights in 1963, and Northwest in 1978. Wichita Catholic schools Kapaun and Bishop Carroll joined in 1963...
*Kapaun Mt. Carmel opened in 1971 as a fusion of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School and Mount Carmel Academy. The former is the school that initially joined the league.
