The G1 Climax has been the premier annual wrestling tournament for a very long time. These days, it usually lasts around a full month, with the two blocks alternating days on which they wrestled. But when this match took place, things were different. Back then, both the A and B block wrestled on the same nights, so the wrestlers got very little tim...
This match originally took place on August 4, 2013, on the same night as this twelve-minute slobberknocker between Shibata and Ishii. This contest was originally rated ****3/4 out of five by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer. That aside, I’ve heard a lot of good things about it in other places as well, so let’s see how it holds up. Both wrestle...
Given its original rating, I was expecting something amazing here. But that’s not what was on display. This match was…good. Not amazing or must-see; just good. If you like Nakamura or Ibushi, it’s worth watching. But if you’re not too sold on either guy, there are better matches of theirs to see first, which I’ll get to. The match told a simple sto...
If the Wrestle Kingdom 9 match between these two wrestlers never happened, there’s a good chance this match would look much better in hindsight. While it might’ve been great live, we know now that they took the winning formula they started with here and improved upon it significantly soon afterward. As a result, this match, while strong for a throw...
May 14, 2023 · Nakamura had an epic Wrestle Kingdom trilogy with the IC title. WK 8: vs Tanahashi in the main event. WK 9: vs Ibushi. WK 10: vs AJ Styles
• Kota Ibushi had spent the past three years establishing himself as arguably the best Junior Heavyweight in the world. Three Title reigns in singles and another with the Tag titles. He’d even (spoiler) won the Junior Heavyweight Title a year earlier at Wrestle Kingdom. • Nakamura had established himself as even bigger than the World Title.
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Sami Zayn – NXT TakeOver: Dallas 2016. One of the best NXT matches of all time and possibly Nakamura’s best match since leaving Japan, his match against Sami Zayn in Dallas is how you make a debut.
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs. AJ Styles – Wrestle Kingdom 10. What do you get when you cross the best Western wrestler in the world with arguably the best Japanese wrestler in the world?
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs Hiroshi Tanahashi – Wrestle Kingdom 8. “The King of Strong Style” vs “The Ace of New Japan” is a match that sold itself purely on the nicknames.
- Shinsuke Nakamura vs Samoa Joe – NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II. Outside of beating Sami Zayn in his debut, this is definitely the biggest win of Nakamura’s WWE career to date.
May 4, 2020 · Everything about this match is perfect: Nakamura’s amazing entrance, Kota Ibushi surviving Nakamura’s obnoxiousness and fighting back, Nakamura acting like a dick in the match thinking he was better than Ibushi, the moves, the counters, the sickening strikes, all of it.

Great match, the one at WK9 is also a classic. I think the WK9 match really propelled Nakamura into the western wrestling consciousness, but the G1 match shown here might be better.
