- Studs Lonigan is an earnest attempt gone wrong, principally through incoherent execution complicated by undisciplined histrionics. Philip Yordan’s scenario is quite faithful to Farrell’s book, which centers its attention on the essentially decent hero who struggles against slum life of Chicago’s South Side district in the 1920s.

The main attraction for contemporary audiences is the cast, but the most interesting aspect of the film is Haskell Wexler's cinematography.
