Stuart Wheeler, whom Tessa met through mutual friends in London and married in 1979, founded the spread betting company IG Index, retiring a multi-millionaire in 2001.
His wife, photographer Tessa Codrington, died in 2016. They had three daughters, including model Jacquetta Wheeler. In June 2020, Wheeler announced that he had stomach cancer with only "six months to live". He died a month later on 23 July 2020, aged 85, at his home Chilham Castle in Kent.
