Stuart Saves His Family is a 1995 American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis based on a series of Saturday Night Live sketches from the early to mid-1990s. The film follows the adventures of would-be self-help guru Stuart Smalley, a creation of comedian Al Franken, as he attempts to save both his deeply troubled family and his low-rated public-access television show.
Stuart loves his family and tries to explain them (“My father grew up in the Great Depression – his mother’s”). But the crisis deepens: An aunt has left the family a $60,000 house that leads to legal problems, and Stuart only makes them worse.
New Age therapist Stuart Smalley (Al Franken) tries to rid his family of substance abuse and co-dependency.

Demented, unhinged, and in turn the crypto-hopetimist Stuart is exacerbated by leaving the trappings of his TV show, trapped in the sick labyrinth of generational trauma and mental illness that his family represents.
