He attended the Ryerson University's Institute of Technology and served in the Canadian Infantry before inaugurating his directing career.
Stern was known for his works with Michael Douglas, Christopher Reeve and Christopher Plummer. His best known movies are The Devil and Max Devlin, Mazes and Monsters, and Money. Stern was also known for directing the miniseries Black Fox.
