Steven Jay Israel (born May 30, 1958) is an American political commentator, lobbyist, author, bookseller, and former politician. He served as a U.S. representative from New York from 2001 to 2017.
In Congress he created the House Center Aisle Caucus and was recognized as a leader on national security issues and the Middle East. Israel’s commentary has been featured on CNN and MSNBC, well as the New York Times, The Atlantic magazine, the Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal.
Former Congressman Steve Israel left Capitol Hill – unindicted and undefeated – to pursue a career as a writer. In addition to writing two critically acclaimed satires of Washington, he heads the non-partisan Cornell University Institute of Politics and Global Affairs in New York City.
Steve Israel represents the Second Congressional District of New York, which includes the towns of Huntington, Babylon, Islip, Oyster Bay and Smithtown. Representative Israel is best known for his leadership on three diverse but vitally important issues in Congress: national security, health and the environment, and U.S.-Israeli relations.
