May 12, 2016 · The Texas rebels of 1836 adhered to the Jeffersonian definition and, as Schlereth notes, began their revolt by both proclaiming their loyalty to their voluntarily chosen nation and rebelling. Also, he points out that the U.S. volunteers who joined the rebellion offered an example of voluntary allegiance.
