How Am I Supposed to Live Without You is the ninth episode of the seventh season and the 104th overall episode of Station 19.

When a wildfire threatens Seattle, the crew must jump into action to save their city. Meanwhile, as the station undergoes changes, Andy contemplates the future.

Ross and Sullivan have sex. Her phone rings and she wants to answer it, but he stops her, saying they'll wait and he'll be quick.

Maya and Carina are having sex when Carina suddenly asks if she should take a pregnancy test. It's been 12 days since the transfer. Maya say she can if she wants, but Carina decides it can wait because it's probably too early anyway. She'd rather focus on her hot wife. She kisses her way down Maya's abdomen, licking her belly button on the way.

Travis wakes to Vic saying they need to leave and if he doesn't hurry, she'll leave without him. He looks down under the sheet and says he'll be out in a minute.

Carina holds up two pregnancy tests and tells Maya they're negative, so the embryo probably didn't take. Maya says they don't know that yet. Carina says she reviewed all her own tests and there's no reason she shouldn't be able to carry, but maybe she missed something. Maya reminds Carina that she was the one who said it was too early to know from an at-home test. Carina needs to get going, so she asks Maya to take Liam to Peggy and Dayna's, saying she'll pick him up on her way home. Maya says she was checking on the wildfire and isn't sure it's safe for Carina to be volunteering only a mile away from it. Carina says they need doctors and she can't stop doing her job just because she might be pregnant. They tell each other they love each other and kiss, then Carina leaves. Maya pulls out her phone and checks again on the wildfire, which is moving west.

Andy is on the phone with Jack, who is also monitoring the wildfire. She hangs up with him when Vic comes into her office. Vic tells Andy that Crisis One is officially going national. Andy is excited and they hug. Andy realizes Vic isn't as happy as she is and Vic admits that she's moving to DC to run it. Andy says that's still good. They need to tell the team, but Vic wants to tell Travis first.

On the roof, Vic tells Travis that she'll come visit and he can come to DC and they can critique the first ladies' inauguration dresses and do other tourist-y things. Vic needs Travis to understand it's a good thing. Travis says he's happy, but it's hard. Travis sees the wildfire smoke in the distance and alerts Vic to it.

    Fall City Wildfire

A wildfire was heading toward Seattle after starting 12 hours prior outside Fall City. Floating embers created a smaller fire. Chief Gonzalez had three teams working to keep the fires from meeting. Ross asked him if he was bringing in additional teams and he said no. The wind shifted to the west, which left Fire B nearly to the ridge separating the two. She urged Gonzalez to call a 5-alarm, but he insisted on staying at a 3-alarm, saying if the fire grew north and they'd already called everyone in, they'd be unprotected. When Ross insisted, Gonzalez called in additional units, including Station 19. In the medical tent, Rebecca begged them to find her husband as she was treated. They had woken up in the fire and gotten separated, along with the couple they were with. When 19 arrived, Andy was assigned as task force commander for Cloudhead Ranch, which had civilians waiting for evacuation. They were the last line of defense keeping the fire from moving west toward the city. Ross said they'd have three engines, but would leave their aid car and ladder truck at base camp. She also send some academy graduates with them to provide assistance. When they arrived, Andy sent Ben and Sullivan to evacuate the campers while the probies laid hose line toward the fire with Beckett and Wiggins supervising. She sent Vic and Travis to clear furniture and brush from the tents. Then she and Maya evaluated the area. With Bennett covering the main lodge, that left them to cover the tents and surrounding area. While they were walking around, they ran into Eliza, who said she was fine, but the man who was with her wasn't. She led them to Cameron, who was seriously burned. He ran into the fire to find his wife, Rebecca. Eliza said she couldn't find her fiancé. They evacuated Cameron and called an aid car to take him to safety. Ben had Richard ventilate him while they waited. Eliza blew a whistle, which she said she used to help her find her fiancé, Bill, when they went out to remote locations. With an aid car 40 minutes away, Ben said they'd have to carry Cameron to the tent, as it was only a mile away. The team put out several spot fires and cleared debris to prevent the fire from spreading. Andy redirected Vic and Travis to a tent with a trapped civilian and a dog. When they asked for backup, Andy went to go herself, but Dominic and Theo said they'd go. Back at base camp, Gonzalez told Ross she made a good call and he was proud of her for not caving in. They still didn't have enough firefighters. Ross had the idea for a hail Mary to buy them some time and called in the firefighters who had been laid off or forced to retire due to the budget cuts. With Dominic and Theo's help, Travis and Vic were able to rescue the civilian and the dog. Ben and the probies took Cameron to the tent and Carina said she'd be with him in a moment. Seeing that Cameron's breathing was restricted by the burned skin and with no doctors immediately available, Ben did an escharotomy, which allowed him to breathe. Carina sent Ben back to the fire while she took over with Cameron. After resting overnight, station 19 woke up to find the fire had come over the ridge. Andy quickly directed her team where to start working. Ross joined them and offered her help. She said they had no more engines available, but when Andy told her about Tulalip, she moved to find a signal to call them for backup. When Theo saw a tree about to fall on Travis, he pushed Travis out of the way, but got hit and trapped himself. They cut apart the tree and freed him. He had an open femur fracture, so Ben applied a tourniquet and they called for a medevac. With the bleeding under control, they moved him onto a backboard and moved him away from the tree. Ben then noticed bruising on his abdomen and said he needed to stabilize Theo's pelvis. He did so and then Ben went with him in the medevac. Once Theo was gone, they heard a whistle in the distance. Maya and Andy followed it, certain it would lead them to Bill. Andy called for extra help while Maya walked ahead. Then fire sprung up behind Maya, trapping her inside the fire.

    Cloudhead Ranch

Theo, Dominic, and Kate, working for Bennett, came to Cloudhead Ranch to protect one building that the owner said to prioritize. When they learned of a trapped civilian and dog, Theo and Dominic abandoned their post to help station 19.

•This episode's title originated from the song How Am I Supposed to Live Without You, originally sung by Laura Branigan.

•This episode scored 2.40 million viewers.

•The episode is dedicated to Jim "JK" Koenekamp.

•As the first part of the series finale, the episode features several Easter eggs to previous episodes:

•Travis's line "Dibs on the puppy" and Andy's line "Wet stuff on the red stuff" were said by Dean in the pilot. Writer Zaiver Sinnett tried to work the puppy line into the episode but could not find a natural way to do it. On the day of filming, director Tessa Blake informed Zaiver that Jay Hayden had requested to work the line into the episode and they figured it out on the day itself.

•As Maya and Andy discuss the couple's fertility struggles, they recall Maya's statement that "Monogamy is for the weak. Or the very, very dedicated" from Contain the Flame.
