   Indeed, I first came to know Skrowaczewski's work through his recording of Chopin's Piano Concerto #1 in E Minor with Artur Rubinstein [RCA]. I also have many LP and CD recordings of the conductor on the Mercury and Biddulph labels and an outstanding privately-issued set of 12 CDs of the Minneapolis/Minnesota Orchestra.

I am not sure how much Bruckner he programmed in Minnesota but I can recall hearing him with the Hallé in the Third Symphony when he was principal conductor of that orchestra during the 1980s.

   • These readings certainly seem to be the product of much experience and thought. Skrowaczewski has a consistent approach to Bruckner which is forthright but unforced and sounds natural. Tempi are almost invariably well-judged and kept constant unless Bruckner explicitly marks a change.

   • Skrowaczewski perhaps underplays elements of mystery and religious fervour but the architectural strength of the readings is compelling. Following Terry Barfoot’s detailed review (see link below), there seems to be no need to go through the symphonies individually.

   Does skowaczewski use the Nowak version of the score?

   • Skowaczewski employs the Nowak edition of the score, which means slightly annoying but not disfiguring cuts in the first and second movements (as well as repeats in the scherzo). Thankfully, he decides against the really senseless cut in the finale’s coda, allowing us to hear the haunting reprise of the first movement’s main theme.
