Note: Full spoilers for the Stalker season finale follow.
By now we all know that the first run of Stalker wasn't exactly a ratings smash with CBS, so it was no surprise when the series wasn't picked up for a second season during the Eye's upfront presentation last week. What was surprising was that knowing this, the show still wrapped on a traditional Kevin Williamson cliffhanger -- one that we could see coming but still served no real purpose to whatever storyline would have come out of it had the show been renewed in the first place.
The episode picked up with the team pressing the theory that it was a serial killer attacking a string of women whose stalker exes had one thing (aside from stalking) in common: they all attended sex and love addict support groups. At the same time, Vicky (guest star Mira Sorvino) stuck around to question her ex-husband in a past case while Beth got back into a grove at work.
Making things awkward (well, more awkward than investigating your ex husband or sticking around to supervise the returning boss) was the continued "are you really into me" conversations that Jack insisted on having with Beth after they shared a kiss at her home last episode. Every time he brought it up it was like a puncture to the story and felt anything but believable coming from Dylan McDermott. Awkward schoolboy crush just doesn't suit that man. Add in a Friends-inspired exchange ("How YOU doin'?") and that uncomfortable rendition of "Close to You" that played in the end, and it was a jarring plot point throughout that we could have done without.
