   • Georgetown was originally named Longchamps in 1781 during the French occupation of the Essequibo and Demerara colonies. Later, after the colonies were returned to the Netherlands in 1783, the town was renamed Stabroek, after Nicolaas Geelvinck, Lord of Stabroek (Belgium), who was one of the directors on the board of the Dutch West India Company.
