Most of the glass panels lack a mullion (or frame) between to allow for clean sight lines, again hearkening back to the original intention of the Space Needle – to observe the changing city below. Green said that the renovated Space Needle’s glass design demonstrates both redundancy and retention, in that the three-layer (three 15 mm plies), annealed glass design passes all design loads even with one ply broken, and still has no risk of pull-out when all plies are broken.

Possibly the most talked-about renovation feature is The Loupe, the world’s first revolving glass floor, which is located in the Space Needle’s Atmos Wine Bar and Restaurant on the 500-foot level. The Loupe’s see-through floor offers 360-degree views of the city and is reinforced with 10 layers of tightly bonded glass.
