You either love Kevin Hart, or you don’t, but there’s no denying the massive success the comedian and now movie star has steadily achieved in his career throughout the years. His latest comedy special, Kevin Hart: What Now?, finds Hart celebrating his biggest, record-breaking triumph yet, when he performed at the Lincoln Financial Field in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA - the first-time in history that a comedian was noted as selling out an entire football stadium on his own.
To compliment the size of the special itself, Hart has brought out the big guns with What Now?, not only giving fans his latest and biggest comedy special to date, but also bookending it with a small, James Bond-esque action parody in which the comedian must accrue enough money for his global tour. Along with him for the ride is Halle Berry, his covert partner, who once again proves how funny she can be when given the chance, and who, like Hart and a couple of other celebrity cameos in the opening, plays herself. Despite the beginning credits of the film - which are clearly spoofing the Bond franchise’s iconic credits sequences - putting What Now? off to a bit of a predictable, unoriginal start, the mini-action film that follows is surprisingly entertaining and well-executed.
While the actual comedy special itself was filmed by Leslie Small, credit for the action sequences goes to Tim Story too, which sees Hart leaning heavily into his public persona, and proceeding to visibly frustrate all of the other players at a high-stakes poker game, including the hilarious Don Cheadle (also playing himself). The banter that ensues between the two movie stars surprisingly emerges as one of the film’s funniest moments, as Hart cashes in on his well-known, loud, and possibly-annoying attitude, making Cheadle angrier and angrier the longer their conversation goes on. It’s a fun and meta opening to the special that feels appropriately large considering the achievement Hart is celebrating.
Thankfully, Hart and his collaborators don’t go too far with the opening sequence either, making sure that it doesn’t take away from the special itself, as he rockets from the brief cinematic intro and onto the stage to thunderous applause from the thousands in Lincoln Financial Field.
Kevin Hart: What Now? is a fun and joyful celebratory look at one of the world’s hottest comedians right now, even if it won’t go down in history as the instant classic comedy special he might have hoped.
