Apr 24, 2024 · This article presents a comprehensive study of 48 persons sentenced to death between 1990 and 2023 who presented as women at the time of their trials. Our research is the first of its kind to conduct a holistic and intersectional analysis of the factors driving women’s death sentences.

Of the 51 women currently on death row, over 24% are Black, and of the 16 women executed since 1976, four—Wanda Jean Allen, Frances Newton, Kimberly McCarthy, and Lisa Coleman—have been Black.
