Sicily (Italian: Sicilia, pronounced [siˈtʃiːlja] ⓘ; Sicilian: Sicilia, pronounced [sɪˈ (t)ʃiːlja] ⓘ, officially Regione Siciliana) is an island in the central Mediterranean Sea, south of the Italian Peninsula in continental Europe and is one of the 20 regions of Italy.
Sicily is the biggest region in the nation of Italy. Phoenician and Greek people colonized the island in the 8th Century BC and sometimes fought wars there. Carthage controlled most of the island until Ancient Rome conquered it.
Sicily was merged with the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Although today an Autonomous Region, with special statute, of the Republic of Italy, it has its own distinct culture. Sicily is both the largest region of the modern state of Italy and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
