Oct 5, 2018 · When looking at the meticulous games and sign systems in Drowning by Numbers, there is a sense that these are something for the audience to participate in and gain their own individual experience from. Certainly, the age of DVDs and streaming have allowed one to engage with these subtleties on a much more rigorous level with repeat viewings.
Drowning by Numbers. Sex, death, number counting and game playing co-exist in Greenaway’s morbidly humorous and quite brilliant work. Three generations of the same family – a grandmother (Plowright), mother (Stevenson) and daughter (Richardson) – are all named Cissie Colpitts.
"Drowning by Numbers" is fascinating and a joy to watch - even more so with Severin's 4K UHD a/v that is like seeing the film anew. The commentary and interviews are very worthwhile and we strongly recommend this as a long term keeper.
