Sep 27, 2021 · It is my opinion that if a book’s contents can be adequately “summed up,” so that you really don’t miss anything by reading the summary, it is not actually a book worth reading. (Of course, there’s no way to tell whether a summary is adequate or not unless you have also read the book.)
You're explicitly not reading the book, your reading a summary of someone else's summery of the book. It's never going to be as valuable because the whole point of reading books, nonfiction especially is to be able to learn the nuances the author is discussing which can't be done with a 5 minute summary from someone else's interpretation.
I want to know as little as possible before reading a book. Broad brush strokes are all I need, plot-wise. Now, all the other stuff you get when deciding about a book to read, is very useful. High-level themes, style, difficulty level, that’s all good.
