- Find Your Local Transmission Tower. Knowing where the nearest TV transmitter is will help you to correctly align your antenna. You have different options for this.
- Preparing the Wooden Base. Begin by preparing the wooden backing board: Draw a 1-inch gap down the middle. Starting 2 inches from the top, mark a line crossing that gap every 5.25 inches.
- Cut the Coat Hangers. Next, cut eight lengths from the coat hangers, each 14 inches long. Each wire length must be bent halfway, to create a V shape, the ends which must be three inches apart.
- Attach the V Wires to the Base. Next, drill eight guide holes for attaching the V wires, using a narrow bit. With the holes drilled, attach the V wires, using the screws and the washers.
- Choose the rod length for your antenna. You will need 2 rods that are 46.4 inches (117.8 cm) long if you are designing the antenna to listen to non-commercial radio stations such as college channels.
- Place your rods perpendicular to each other and tie them together with a piece of string or tape. You might need to tape together extra pieces to brace the frame.
- Wrap insulated wire around 3 of the frame edges in the formation of a square. These lengths will be of equal size. You will need 32.8 inches (83.2 cm) of wire for the non-commercial type of antenna's 3 sides.
- Tie together the corners of the last side with tape to pull the wire taunt. This 4th side is comprised of 2 half lengths coming together to form the final side.
Supplies. A single wood board. At least 3 feet long, and more than 1.5 inches wide. It can be anything, really, so long as it’s deep enough to drill short screws into. Our video host uses a 3 x 1 pine board. But a good old-fashioned 2×4 is likely the cheapest. Copper, aluminum, or steel wire.
