   Why did Greenpeace stop whaling?

   • Greenpeace activists protest against Icelandic whaling in the North Atlantic in 1978. Dedicated campaigning led to the IWC declaring that commercial whaling had to be stopped to allow shrinking whale populations to recover. The ban on commercial whaling started from 1985. As well as the moratorium, the IWC declared a Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

   Why do we kill whales?

   • Killing whales for food has been happening for millennia. But it was commercial whaling – turning whales into barrels of oil for profit – that led to the wholesale destruction of most of the world’s populations of big whales. The loss of whales from our oceans is the same story as overfishing of big fish – sharks, tuna, cod and others.
