The first film follows the books, but the other two are a completely divergent storyline, especially the middle film. For myself, I saw the films first and then tried to read the books in order to be better equipped to write fanfiction for them, and found myself struggling to even finish them.

They are entirely separate, and the first book and movie are the only ones with any similarities of note, and even then, those similarities won't affect watching the movie in the slightest. Also, as to your original question - what you should expect is action, especially in The Death Cure.
