A shadow is a dark shape made when light is stopped or blocked by an object or a person. Some objects are opaque such as stone, metal and wood. This means light doesn't travel through them.
When you see a question with the following condition: the object is moving along the screen / the ground. We have to use a different set of rules. Alternatively, you can always draw the light rays as I did on the diagrams.
Can they measure how much the shadows have moved by creating marks of their favourite toys, and notice the silhouettes move or change? This is such a great alternative to academic worksheets & a simple way to engage children in creativity, following their own interests & thinking.
When the opaque object is between the screen and the torch, a bigger shadow is formed when the object is further away from the screen. I learnt to visualise in my mind how the shadow changes as I move either the screen, torch or the object around.
Shadows lengthen as the light source gets lower or as the object moves further away from it. So, they can be used, for example, to enable us to identify whether the action of the painting takes place at sunrise, sunset or the middle of the day (see Fig 12).
