Apr 4, 2023 · Follow a discussion guide If you love the idea of set topics and questions guiding your meeting, consider using a discussion guide. Following a discussion guide allows book clubs to cover all of the major themes of a book, and many publishers provide them for free online.
Sep 7, 2023 · When creating a book club, it’s helpful to go over expectations for both the hosts and the members. Managing expectations early can let members know if the club is a good fit for them and make them aware of what is being asked of them as a member.
- You Need To Read the Book (…or Do You?) Reading the selected book is an obvious “rule” for book clubs, otherwise what’s the point? And most articles suggesting rules for books clubs consider this a hard and fast one.
- Come Prepared to Discuss the Book. It’s not enough to read the book and “like it” or “hate it”. You want to be able to participate a robust conversation about what made the book good (or weird, or a slog, or illuminating.)
- Make Sure to RSVP. …and to cancel that RSVP if you can’t make it. This is a simple rule of how to be polite in life. But, just to underscore it, if your club is being hosted in someone’s home, then they have likely prepared food or refreshments.
- Practice Respectful Honesty. You and your book club friends will, at times, have very different takeaways from your reading experiences. And you should be honest about whether you liked the book (or not), how it made you feel, or the quality of your reading experience.
- Send Out Meeting Reminders. We recommend that you send out a meeting reminder at least a week in advance of your book club date. The obvious benefit is to remind people to attend, along with the when and where.
- Come Prepared. Don’t assume that the book club conversation will simply flow freely. It’s a good idea to come prepared with some discussion prompts which can get the conversation going, or revive one that’s flagging.
- Ask Your Book Clubbers to Come Prepared. Even better, ask your fellow book club friends to do some of the heavy lifting. You can assign each of them to bring one or two questions.
- Occasionally Remind Everyone of the Rules. It’s easier to keep everyone on track than to right the ship after its already started veering toward the iceberg.
Apr 16, 2024 · Here’s a simple structure to guide your book club discussions: Welcome and Introductions: Begin by welcoming everyone and introducing any new members. Recap the Book: Provide a brief summary of the book to refresh everyone’s memory.
These tips will help anyone tasked with leading a book club discussion make a plan, create discussion questions, and run a book club meeting.
