UK Birth Records Search Procedure. In the UK, birth records are compiled by the General Register office (GRO). The General Register office houses all birth, marriage, and death records in England and Wales dated in or after 1837. It also houses birth certificates that were recorded overseas.

You can order a copy of a birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership and death certificate from GRO. All births, adoptions, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths registered in England or Wales have a GROindex reference number.
GRO has records of births, marriages and deathsof some British citizens that have taken place abroad since the late 18th century. These include births, marriages or deaths: 1. registered by the armed forces 2. recorded by British consulates or high commissions 3. at sea, or on British oil or gas rigs or aircraft
For copies of a decree absolute or final order of the dissolution of a civil partnership, you’ll need to contact either: 1. the court where the divorce or dissolution was granted 2. the Principal Registry of the Family Division
