Ores are various types of minerals which can be found and mined throughout the world, including underground and on Floating Islands. All ores are mined using a pickaxe (though not all pickaxes will work on all ores) and smelted at a Furnace, Hellforge or Adamantite/Titanium Forge.
Ores can be found almost anywhere in the world, though some can be found in certain places more frequently than others:
Instead, all such ores will be spawned in different ways once hardmode is activated in a given world. Small amounts of Cobalt Ore, Mythril Ore, Adamantite Ore, and their alternatives will be placed throughout a world based on how many Demon Altars or Crimson Altars are destroyed by the player. Specifically, every third altar starting from the first...
Chlorophyte Ore will slowly start to grow out of jungle grass and mud in the Underground Jungle once hardmode is activated in a world.
The only ores which will always spawn naturally in any given world are Meteorite, Obsidian, Hellstone, and Chlorophyte. All other ores are paired off so that only one out of each pair will spawn in a world. For pre-hardmode ores, this is determined at world generation; for hardmode ores, this is determined when the first, second, and third Demon Al...
In all cases, equipment made from replacement ores will be statistically slightly stronger than equivalent equipment made from the original ore.

Here are some of the more interesting findings: Except for Silver (and Hellstone since the ore is worthless), all metals can be sold smelted or unsmelted for the same net value. Crafting the smelted bars into anything for resale ends up netting you less per bar than just selling the bars outright.
Mining Chlorophyte and Titanium Ore in Terraria's Jungle with a Spelunker and Shine Potion to assist in finding the metals. When I was a new player and searching for whether depth mattered for ore, I read some dated information from early in Terraria's development and thought it true.
Using torch sonar to your advantage (the particles that occur when a torch is broken illuminate ground they pass through, and may expose caves, helping you find ores) will also help. Dig straight down. In Minecraft, this is incredibly stupid because you can't see what's below you.
Ores are primary crafting materials necessary for game progress. They generally must be crafted into bars at a Furnace, after which they can craft several essential tools, weapons, armor, and other items. Some items require raw ores themselves, most commonly bricks and potions.
