Miranda Merchant (Emily Rudd) is returning to Selkie Island for the first time, since she was an infant. She was raised by her father in Seattle, and has no memory of her mother. But her father's sudden passing has left her without a guardian, and now she has no choice but to return. Miranda's grief and complete sense of loss, has shattered her sense of security. She was looking forward to her senior year in high school, and now her whole life is turned upside down.
There are a few positives. On the ferry ride to the island, she met TJ (Keenan Tracey). He's charming and attractive, and also shares the pain of losing a parent. He's promised to show her around, when she gets settled. There are others she's not so sure about, TJ's girlfriend Ginny (Siobhan Williams), for one. Ginny seems like the typical entitled, spoiled rich kid, not the type Miranda would choose to hang out with. But Miranda has bigger worries. She has to deal with meeting a mother she doesn't remember, a new living situation, and feelings of anger, for being abandoned. Miranda believes her mother, Amelia (Maria Dizzia), deserted her as a baby, and never tried to contact her. Maybe that's true, but there might be more happening on this strange little island, than meets the eye.
