Oct 5, 2023 · Santa Marta is the perfect base for travelers to experience some of the most incredible beaches and wonderful Colombia has to offer. There are world-class beaches with crystal clear waters at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, full of thick forest and snow-capped peaks.
Mar 1, 2024 · Now we reach the aforementioned Playa Cristal. This beach is the most popular beach in Santa Marta that’s not near the city itself. It’s an easy day trip from Taganga by boat which makes it the ideal paradise beach for most tourists passing through the area.
- Playa La Bahia, Centro. The worst beach I went to in Santa Marta. Scratch that, this spot rivalled the worst beach I’ve ever been to in my life: Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
- Playa Los Cocos, Centro. Playa Los Cocos was a welcome surprise. I found this beach after hitting the gym right next to Santa Marta Marina. I got nice and swole, then hit Playa Los Cocos for a relaxing swim.
- Taganga Beach. The biggest backpacker ghetto in all of the Colombian coast, Taganga is not a place I planned to spend a lot of time. If you’re into that scene, it can be a great time, and the nightlife is fantastic.
- Rodadero Beach. If you plan to spend more than a few weeks in Santa Marta, I’d surmise Rodadero is where you’d want to be. The neighborhood is just five minutes from the center of Santa Marta and right on the beach.

Beach in the city:The beach in front of the old city center is polluted.Rodadero Beach: Rodadero is an area with many skyscrapers next to the airport. There are tons of tourists and street sellers.Pozos Colorados:Lovely beach with fewer people, but you still have the skyscrapers in your back.Taganga:It’s a small fishing town with a lousy reputation. It’s totally fine during the day, but the main beach is crowded on weekends.Thankfully, there are stunning beaches near Santa Marta. Let’s look at the various day trips you can arrange from the city.
The Tayrona National Parkis HUGE. There are four entrances, but only two—Calabazo andZaino—arefor travelers who want to hike within the national park. The two other entrances are Bahia Concha and Palangana. Both are near Santa Marta and allow visitors to explore the park’s secluded beaches.
