The first inhabitants of what is now the City of San Mateo were members a tribe of the Ohlone Indians (called Coastanoans by Spanish explorers). This Tribe lived in the area from South San Francisco to Belmont for at least 4000 years before explorers first arrived on the Peninsula.
San Mateo County was formed in 1856 upon the division of San Francisco County, one of the state's 18 original counties established at California statehood in 1850. Until 1856, San Francisco 's city limits extended west to Divisadero Street and Castro Street, and south to 20th Street.
