Count Rupert of Hentzau is the main antagonist of the 1894 novel The Prisoner of Zenda and its various film adaptations. He's Duke Michael's closest minion and ally towards helping him drug and hide his half-brother.

In the 1937 film adaptation, he's portrayed by the late Douglas Fairbanks Jr..

Not much is known of Rupert's early life, though what is known is that he created a vast criminal record for a lot of his actions was hired King Rudolf V's half-brother Duke Michael to help with a plan to steal the throne from Rudolf as he was envious that he was the older sibling and yet didn't get to be king just because his mother wasn't of royal blood.

On the day before the king's coronation, English gentleman Rudolf Rassendyll went to a small country somewhere between Vienna and Bucharest (unnamed in the film, Ruritania in the novel) for a fishing vacation. While there, he is puzzled by the odd reactions of the natives towards him. Rassendyll discovers the reason not too long later, when he meets Colonel Zapt and Captain Fritz von Tarlenheim. Zapt introduces him to the soon-to-be-crowned king, Rudolf V, and the two of them realize they were distant cousins who looked completely identical to each other (except for Rassendyll's beard). The future king, astounded at first by the close resemblance, takes a great liking to the Englishman.

They celebrate their acquaintance by drinking late into the night. Rudolf V is warned by his servant Joseph that he had a king duty the next day, and shouldn't be drinking so much wine on a day like this. He also reminds Rudolf that his father was never is reckless and carefree as he currently is. But Rudolf ignores him and doesn't see the harm. Rudolf is particularly delighted with the bottle of wine sent to him by his half-brother, Duke Michael, which he initially resists, but is unable to hold back and he drinks the wine bottle himself. He tries to walk up from the table and falls to the floor after a few steps.

The next morning, the Englishman is woken up to notice to fallen king, as the wine Rudolf's brother had offered was drugged as a plot for Michael to try and usurp the throne. If Rudolf didn't attend the ceremony and get crowned that day, he would never be able to get crowned. Zapt decided to take advantage of Rassendyll's visit to the country and convinces the reluctant Englishman to impersonate Rudolf for the ceremony. Rassendyll didn't think he would fool anybody into thinking he was the king, but he still had to go out there and give it a shot. Zapt and Fritz hide the dead body so Michael wouldn't figure out the deception.

In a separate room, Michael is seen writing a deed, taking note of the King's disappearance and giving him permission to rule the kingdom. He tells three of his men to deliver the deed 20 minutes after they receive word that the ceremonies have been cancelled and to go to there respective posts. Antoinette de Mauban was listening and stated that Michael said she'd be her wife. She wanted to serve him and comfort him, but she'd refuse the marriage if went on with his plan to overthrow his half-brother. Michael doesn't want to call his plan off, and then Rupert walks in even though he was supposed to be cathedral. Rupert states there was no hurry to go the coronation of a king that wouldn't even be there, but Michael insists that they attend, so it wouldn't be so obvious that were behind all this. Then Rupert states that burgermeister of Zenda had arrived to pay his respects and he stated Michael was too busy. Michael in response calls Rupert out for his excuses and impertinence and goes to see the burgermeister. Rupert stays behind to have a conversation with Antoinette and starts to develop feelings for him. Antoinette's not interested in Rupert's smooth comments or charisma.

As Rudolf's practicing an oath as part of the impersonation act, Rupert and Michael are both anticipating the moment where the King would be unable to arrive at the coronation, but the evil duo was surprised to realize that the coronation hadn't been cancelled and didn't know the English lookalike had been put in his place. Michael sends Rupert to go to Zenda to find out what went wrong. The coronation goes just as planned with no setbacks and Rudolf Rassendyll develops some feelings for Flavia and they get along great thanks to Rudolf's charm and kindness.
