Throughout his brilliant and itinerant career, Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) built a strong and fruitful relationship with the Paris Opera. It began in style as the Kirov Ballet, from Leningrad, went to Paris while touring in Europe, a tour during which Nureyev decided to defect to the West.

Rudolf Nureyev first danced Don Quixote at the Kirov Theatre in 1960 and it became one of his favourite roles. In 1966 he restaged it for the Vienna Opera Ballet.
