Dec 5, 2023 · Date: 21st March to 24th April 2024. Inspired by Marius Petipa’s choreography, Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote is a true celebration of dance with a Spanish flavour. The soloists and the Corps de Ballet are carried away in ensembles and pas de deux to the strains of a spirited score.
The ballet Don Quixote was first created by Marius Petipa in 1869 in Moscow. Inspired by Cervantes' novel, it recounts the loves of Kitri and Basilio. Rudolf Nureyev first danced Don Quixote at the Kirov Theatre in 1960 and it became one of his favourite roles.
Named Dance Director at the Paris Opera in 1983, he kept a special status allowing him to dance in 40 shows each season, which is how he performed in all the ballet he created or revived for the Company (Basilio in Don Quichotte, Jean de Brienne in Raymonda, Drosselmeyer in The Nutcracker, the Prince in Swan Lake, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette
Tracy later became Nureyev's secretary and live-in companion for over 14 years in a long-term open relationship until death. According to Tracy, Nureyev said that he had a relationship with three women in his life, he had always wanted a son, and once had plans to father one with Nastassja Kinski .
