In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God. With its ships plying the globe, the city opens its arms to all, as long as they come prepared to do business and there is profit to be made. With the gold flowing all is well, but when a contract between Bassanio and Shylock is broken, simmering racial tensions boil over.
This adaptation is very basic: aside from a few kisses in Act 1 (if you're going to go for it with the Antonio/Bassanio romance, you have to commit more than this), it's pretty rote, and a lot of scenes that I've seen loaded with subtext in other performances are just spoken directly to the audience.
