Mar 6, 2024 · Nestled within New Zealand’s geothermal heartland, Rotorua is renowned for its geothermal attractions. Visitors from all around New Zealand and the world visit this region to visit both paid and free geothermal parks. Each offers a unique lens into Earth’s inner workings.
- Orakei Korako. Known as “The Hidden Valley”, Orakei Korako features caves, springs and silica formations among other geothermal wonders. The highlight of the valley is a variety of silica terraces, such as the Golden Fleece Terrace with its bronze and golden(ish) steaming terraces.
- Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. “Out of this world” is the best way to describe Wai-O-Tapu. The iconic Champagne Pool, the Devil’s Bath and the huge bubbling mud pools are a window to the inner workings of the planet.
- Waimangu Volcanic Valley. On 10 June 1886, the Tarawera volcano erupted destroying all life in the area. With that, the volcanic area grew 20 times larger and formed the Waimangu Volcanic Valley.
- Te Puia. Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley was once home to a Maori pā (fortified village) called Te Puia. It is now a great cultural attraction mixing Maori culture and geothermal features.
- Orakei Korako Geothermal Attraction - "The Hidden Valley" For me there is no question. Orakei Korako is my absolute favorite geothermal park in the Rotorua - Taupo region!
- Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland. Wai-O-Tapu is the most famous of the Rotorua volcanic Parks mostly because of the Champagne pool. Rotorua to Wai-O-Tapu - 30min.
- Waimangu volcanic valley. Waimangu was a pleasant surprise. For those looking for an enjoyable hike in Nature with well explained geothermal features along the way, this is a great option.
- Te Puia. Te Puia's main Geothermal attraction is the Pohutu geyser. But you can also enjoy a kiwi bird house, a Maori show and a lot of Maori arts. Rotorua to Te Puia - 5min.
