They are straight adaptations from the novels and Lassgård skillfully plays the moody, sad sack investigator we love in Henning Mankell’s books.

I agree, I have been really delighted with the Lassgård versions. I find the characters are very well drawn, in particular Kurt himself - full of passion, intuition. and energy.
