May 25, 2017 · Roland Clinton “Wink” Winkler. Roland Winkler was a kind soul. A Dancer and Musician, he was paralyzed from the shoulders down at age 19 due to a car accident in 1979 while riding with pop star Leif Garrett. He was confined to a wheelchair for the next 38 years.

He had publicly promised to look after Roland Winkler financially following the car crash, but Winkler's parents sued Garrett in January 1980. The case was eventually settled in December 1984. Winkler died on 25 May 2017 at the age of 57.
