Roland Pertwee (15 May 1885 [3] – 26 April 1963) [4] was an English playwright, film and television screenwriter, director and actor. He was the father of Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee and playwright and screenwriter Michael Pertwee. [5] He was also the second cousin of actor Bill Pertwee and grandfather of actors Sean Pertwee and Dariel Pertwee.
Pertwee's mother, Avice Scholtz, separated from his father Roland when Pertwee was young. His father remarried, and his mother found a new partner, Louis Auguste De La Garde, with whom Pertwee did not build a relationship; she died in 1951, leaving Pertwee's elder brother Michael as her executor. May 20, 1996 · Born John Devon Roland Pertwee in Chelsea, London, the second son of playwright, painter, and actor Roland Pertwee, and actress Avice Pertwee. He attended Wellington House Preparatory School in Westgate-On-Sea in Kent, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from which he was expelled.
It was twenty years ago today, on Monday 20th May 1996, that we lost the irrepressible, the inspirational, the uniquely talented man that was Jon Pertwee. John Devon Roland Pertwee was born in July 1919 in London, a few months after the end of World War One.
Jon died on 20 May 1996, aged 76, at Sherman, Connecticut, USA and was buried at Putney Vale Cemetery, London. He was survived by his wife Ingeborg and their children Sean Pertwee and Dariel Pertwee who have both become actors. Roland Pertwee was Governor of RADA at the time of Jon's attendance, but his father's position won Jon no favours, and indeed Jon was eventually asked to leave. Cast as a Greek wind in the chorus of Euripides' Iphigena , Jon refused to perform the part on the grounds that the role was too boring.
