Series 1
Episodes of the first two series were around 30 minutes long, and aired on BBC Two. Also unlike later series the grand final was not given its own dedicated episode and was instead shown as part of the episode containing the final heat.

During the run of Series 2 two specials were also produced. The first, The Making of Robot Wars was a behind-the-scenes special on the making of the first series. A week after the end of the series The Best of Robot Wars was shown, an episode featuring selected highlights from the second series of the show.
Series 3
Episodes starting with this series are 45 minutes in length. Heat I was originally scheduled for broadcast on 4 February but was postponed to the following week due to extended tennis coverage. The First World Championship was produced at the same time as the rest of Series 3 and was originally released on video (between the broadcast of Heats M and N) before premiering on TV in 2001 on BBC Choice during the run of Extreme Series 1. This was followed by a repeat on BBC Two.

Episodes this series were around 22 minutes long to fit into a half-hour timeslot, including commercials.
