Routh recounts a conversation overheard between Gerhard and a copyist during the rehearsal of Gerhard’s Symphony No. 4, ‘New York’ (1967), after the copyists suggest a certain passage be removed, which Routh suggests ‘throws a light on Gerhard’s personality as well as his music; an element of seriousness is concealed, in true Anglo-Saxon style’: 8
