To understand the circumstances and context in which Roberto Gerhard composed before his exile, as well as his Catalan identity, it is imperative first to examine the history of Catalan nationalism –culminating with an upsurge in Catalan national sentiment at the beginning of the 20th century.
Roberto Gerhard ended his career in the very forefront of musical modernism, producing in his last 15 years a series of scores notable for their scintillating textural invention and their almost Varesian cragginess of expression.
His final decade brought Symphony No.3 ‘Collages’ incorporating electronics and Symphony No.4 ‘New York’ commissioned by the New York Philharmonic following Bernstein’s US premiere of the first symphony, as well as the masterly Concerto for Orchestra (1965) [all three works published by Oxford University Press].
