- About Pitt Law
The University of Pittsburgh School of Law (Pitt Law) is the law school of the University of Pittsburgh, a public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1895 and became a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools in 1900.
While the School of Law was formally founded in 1895, legal studies were a part of the curriculum at the University of Pittsburgh as early as 1843, and its first law degrees were conferred in 1847. Until well past 1850, the chief method of legal education in America was apprenticeship.
The founding of the School of Law at the University of Pittsburgh - at the time known as the Western University of Pennsylvania - is commonly attributed to the year 1895. Yet, graduates were emerging from the law department as early as 1847.
