Robert Bevan was born in Hove, Sussex. Studied at the Westminster School of Art and Academie Julian in Paris. In 1894 met Gaugin in Port Aven, Brittany. In 1897 married to Stanislawa de Karlowska. In 1905 held his first solo show at the Baillie Gallery. Was the founder member of Camden Town Group in 1911, in 1913 of London Group.
In 1900 husband and wife painters Robert Polhill Bevan and Stanislawa de Karlowska established their first London home in Adamson Road in Swiss Cottage. There both painted this part of north London.
