Robben Island (Afrikaans: Robbeneiland) is an island in Table Bay, 6.9 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of the coast of Bloubergstrand, north of Cape Town, South Africa. It takes its name from the Dutch word for seals (robben), hence the Dutch/Afrikaans name Robbeneiland, which translates to Seal (s) Island.

Feb 21, 2020 · Robben Island’s history dates back as far as 1400s right through to the 1900s where it was inscribed as a Museum and as a World Heritage Site. Robben Island’s multi-layered history also recognises the Khoi/San i.e. Krotoa, Leper Colony, Xhosa Chiefs, and many ex-political prisoners amongst other historical giants; not forgetting the Islands fauna, flora and wildlife.
Robben Island is best known as the site of a maximum security prison where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated during apartheid. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Robben Island is a must-see for any tourists visiting South Africa.
