  1. A map of the tectonic plates of the earth showing the different boundary types in different colors. Locations where plates collide (convergent boundaries) are shown in red. Locations where plates are spreading (divergent boundaries) are shown in yellow.

    • Convergent Boundaries. The teeth along the convergent boundaries mark the upper side, which is overriding the other side. The convergent boundaries correspond to subduction zones where an oceanic plate is involved.
    • Divergent Boundaries. Continental divergent plates exist in East Africa and Iceland, but most of the divergent boundaries are between oceanic plates. As the plates split apart, whether, on land or the ocean floor, magma rises to fill in the empty space.
    • Transform Boundaries. Notice that the divergent boundaries are periodically broken up by black transform boundaries, forming a zigzag or staircase formation.
    • Hotspots. The U.S. Geological Survey map also lists the Earth's major hotspots. Most volcanic activity on Earth occurs at divergent or convergent boundaries, with hotspots being the exception.
  2. Sep 5, 2024 · The types of plate boundaries are primarily classified into three main categories: Divergent, Convergent, and Transform. Each of these boundaries can result in specific geological features and processes.

  3. Use the map below to see where the three different types of plate boundaries are found throughout the world. First, find the KEY in the green box located at the bottom of the map. Then, select each boundary name in the KEY to see its location.

  4. Continental Crust. The Continental Crust is under the continents. Its thickness is variable, with an average of 18.6 miles (30Km). In areas with mountains, it can reach a depth of 62.1 miles (100Km). The Continental Crust is mainly made up of Granite. Granite is rich in minerals such as feldspar and quartz (aluminum and silicon).

Apr 24, 2024 · Examples of continent-continent convergent boundaries are the collision of the India Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the Himalaya Mountains, and the collision of the African Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the series of ranges extending from the Alps in Europe to the Zagros Mountains in Iran.

  7. Plate tectonics is a theory about how Earth's lithosphere is divided into a series of rigid plates; and, how movements of these plates produce earthquakes, volcanoes, ocean trenches, mountain ranges, and more.
