Martin Evans was one of the most influential people in model engineering. He was not just an editor and writer, he was designer of some of the most popular model locomotives of all time, and an authority on full size locomotives, especially those that ran on the eastern side of the country.
0-8-4T. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 0-8-4 represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles, and four trailing wheels on two axles (usually in a trailing bogie).
Under the Whyte notation, a 2-8-4 is a steam locomotive that has two unpowered leading wheels, followed by eight coupled and powered driving wheels, and four trailing wheels. Shortly after his arrival to the LMS, Stanier started the long scheme of equipping the railway with a modern fleet of steam locomotives, suitable for both current and future traffic needs. One area of the UK’s largest railway company that required new motive power was the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSR). To address the need for engines ...
Although withdrawal came early on, one member of the class, the first to be built, was saved for preservation and now apart of the National Collection at the National Railway MuseumYork. This engine, No.2500, has mostly spent its years in the National Collection as a static display but has been in steam for a small amount of time. There are current...

With the bad experience of the K "River" class tanks the Southern had not designed any further tank locomotives except for the Z class 0-8-0 which was primarily a yard engine. However a 2-6-4 tank design was selected as suitable for this purpose and thus the tanks and bogies made surplus by the K class rebuilding could be re-used.
Robinson designed these powerful 0-8-4 tank locomotives in 1907 for hump shunting the newly opened Wath-on-Dearne marshalling yard in South Yorkshire. Initially, four were built between 1907 and 1908.

European 2-8-4 tank locomotives were a logical transition from the 2-8-2T locomotive types, allowing larger fireboxes and larger coal bunkers. They were mainly used for busy suburban services in heavily populated suburban areas of big cities, but infrequently also for sparsely populated rural areas or long distance lines.
